Easterly Winds Bring High Fire Risk

Firefighters Check New Starts STOCKBEND, OR — The late summer early fall weather forecast is causing concern for late season wildfires.  The predicted 15-20 mph dry easterly winds can turn a smoldering campfire or an errant spark from a vehicle into a raging blaze in minutes. Coupled with low humidity and warm temperatures, fire risk is high.  This time of year, the number one cause of fires is human activity.

To help limit the likelihood of wildfires, officials ask that you:

  • Operate ATVs and other motorized vehicles only on established roads.
  • Check your vehicle for dragging tow chains that can send sparks into roadside vegetation.
  • Don’t park on dry grass – the hot exhaust system can set it smoldering in seconds.
  • Check current fire restrictions for the area before building a campfire.

Smoke only in an enclosed vehicle. Properly dispose of cigarette butts.
