(WASHINGTON) — Secret Service agents locked down the White House shortly before President Obama left for Selma, Alabama, on Saturday.
The president was scheduled to leave at about 10:30 a.m. The Secret Service later said that in two separate incidents, a K9 unit had alerted on a vehicle at 16th Street and Constitution Avenue and a vendor cart near 15th Street and G street had a fire or smoke issue that was contained with D.C. Fire on the scene.
Secret Service agents were seen taking positions on the North Lawn. Lock-downs at the White House are not uncommon.
Despite the travel delay, the first family will be in Selma later Saturday, where President Obama will make a speech for the 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” a landmark event of the civil rights movement.
