Science Pub: “The Dharma In DNA: Intersections Of Buddhism And Science”

Bend, Ore. – Oregon State University – Cascades continues its Science Pub offerings with a presentation by Dee Denver, an associate professor of integrative biology in the molecular and cellular biology graduate program within OSU’s College of Science.

Denver, who studies molecular evolution and DNA mutation rates, spent a sabbatical at Maitripa College, a liberal arts college in Portland, Ore. focused on Tibetan Buddhist studies. He will present “The Dharma in DNA: Intersections of Buddhism and Science” on Tuesday, Apr. 21 in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins in Bend.

Participants will learn that while science and Buddhism might seem to have little in common, dialogues between these two traditions reveal many unexpected points of harmony including a shared value in logic and reason that shapes their respective worldviews.

Dee’s research focuses on the evolution of DNA in microscopic worms and sea anemones. His work on molecular evolution and DNA mutation rates has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and appears in current undergraduate evolution textbooks.

Science Pubs take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Science Pubs are free to community members, but reservations are required. Space is limited to 100 guests. To register, visit http://www.osucascades.edu/sciencepubs.
