iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Another promising pitcher has to undergo Tommy John Surgery as Colorado Rockies closer Adam Ottavino will miss the rest of the season.
“It was devastating news, but I want to be a part of this team this year,” Ottavino told the Denver Post.
Ottavino was promoted to closer in mid-April an flourished in the role. He didn’t give up a single earned run in 10.1 innings of work. He also struck out 13 batters over that span.
“If it’s going to happen, at least I have a good shot at pitching sometime next year and coming back strong,” Ottavino said. “This is something a lot of people have to deal with. I’m not alone in this way.”
The Rockies bullpen has already logged the most innings in the National League, so the loss of Ottavino puts an even bigger strain on the pitching staff.
John Axford will return to the closer’s role as LaTroy Hawkins is currently on the disabled list.
