Polls Show What and How Much to Give to Grads

Stockbyte/Comstock/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — A handshake or a peck on the cheek is a nice way to congratulate a graduate in your house but really, they’re probably going to expect more than that.

So what do you get the grad? A survey by the National Retail Federation says that 57 percent plan to give cash, a gift that hardly anyone turns down.

Meanwhile, 38 percent will bestow the grad with a greeting card (presumably with something inside), 31 percent will hand them a gift card, 12 percent plan to give clothes and nine percent said that electronic items were appropriate for the occasion.

As for how much to spend, the NRF says the average among the 6,500 people surveyed was $52.

However, retailmenot.com must have interviewed 1,000 different people because the responses were more extravagant. For high school grads, it was $111 and $243 for college graduates.
