(TOKYO) — A magnitude 7.8 earthquake rattled the coast of Japan Saturday night.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake struck over 660 kilometers beneath the Pacific Ocean near Japan’s Ogasawara Islands, also known as the Bonin Islands, about 543 miles south of Tokyo.
There was no tsunami threat issued because of the earthquake’s “deep-focus” nature, meaning the earthquake struck deep inside the earth. The U.S. Geological Survey says deep-focus earthquakes “cause less damage on the earth’s surface” although large enough ones could be felt at a “great distance from their epicenters.”
No injuries have been reported so far.
