(ROME) — Almost half of all the money immigrant workers in Europe send home goes to keeping small food producers afloat, a new report from the United Nations shows.
The U.N. says migrant workers living in Europe sent home a total of more than $109 billion last year.
Forty percent of the remittances go to struggling farmers in developing countries around the world. The U.N. is calling for more competitive money transfer fees to help them out.
A migrant in Europe spends an average of more than 7 percent of the savings they send home. The U.N. says a fee of 5 percent or less would mean $2.5 billion more going to the world’s poorest people.
