FBI Investigating St. Louis Cardinals in Houston Astros Data Breach

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The FBI is investigating an illegal breach of the Houston Astros baseball operations database by the St. Louis Cardinals.

The database contains internal information about trades, statistics and scouting reports.

Corporate espionage is commonly investigated by the FBI but this is the first known case involving one professional sports team’s alleged hack of another.

In a statement Tuesday, Major League Baseball said it would wait until the investigation is over before deciding what to do.

“Major League Baseball has been aware of and has fully cooperated with the federal investigation into the illegal breach of the Astros’ baseball operations database,” the league said. “Once the investigative process has been completed by federal law enforcement officials, we will evaluate the next steps and will make decisions promptly.”

The Cardinals, meanwhile, said in a statement that the team “has fully cooperated with the investigation and will continue to do so.”
