Zimbabwe Authorities Suspend Hunting Outside National Park

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Zimbabwe is trying to get the United States to extradite the Minnesota man who killed the country’s favorite lion.

The United States is unlikely to grant the request but the man who killed the lion could face more charges here at home.

The U.S. law that could apply here isn’t about the poaching of wild animals overseas, but it’s the issue of importing them. If charges are pursued and a conviction made, jail time is possible.

Another lion was rumored to have been shot and killed but has since been found safe and sound in Zimbabwe.

Authorities in Zimbabwe, however, aren’t taking any more chances and are instituting new rules int he country.

The Zimbabwe parks and wildlife management authority released a statement saying, “The hunting of lions, leopards and elephants in areas outside the Hwange National Park has been suspended with immediate effect.”
