Mark Wilson/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — United Airlines CEO Jeff Smisek stepped down on Tuesday, effective immediately, with the company naming Oscar Munoz as his replacement.

Smisek resigned his roles as Chairman, President, CEO and Director at United in connection with an internal investigation. United notes that the internal investigation is linked to a federal investigation involving the company and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The company’s executive vice president of communications and government affairs and its senior vice president of corporate and government affairs also stepped down in connection with the investigation.

The company did not offer any information on the subject or subjects of the investigation, only that they “do not raise any accounting or financial reporting concerns.”

“In my years serving on the board, I have been impressed by the dedication and skill of my new coworkers,” Munoz said in a statement. “Together, we will make United the top-performing airline.”
