Southwest Airlines Back Up After Nationwide Glitch

icholakov/iStock Editorial/ThinkStock(CHICAGO) — Southwest Airlines says the technical problem that delayed hundreds of flights on Sunday has been solved.

Asked what caused the issues and whether they could have been the result of a hack, Southwest said there was no evidence to support a security breach.

“The technical issue was isolated to a software application which failed and was able to be restored. It took our technology team several hours to test and isolate the specific application that was causing the Customer Service issues. There is nothing to indicate the technical issues were a result of any security or data breach,” said Southwest spokesperson Lisa Tiller.

A nationwide technical glitch caused Southwest Airlines to have to manually process customers due to problems on its website, app and in reservation systems around the country.

As of 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, 450 flights were delayed out of approximately 3600 flights scheduled to operate.

“It’s never too early to say thank you and to extend our apologies and we want to share those sentiments both with our hard-working Employees and our loyal and understanding Customers, whom we hope to welcome back for a better experience soon,” Southwest said in a statement.

Though Southwest’s systems are running again, the airline is still urging passengers to arrive two hours before their scheduled departure.
