kimetan/iStock/ThinkStock(NEW YORK) — Scientists have found the key to malaria’s growth, says the BBC.

The scientists have determined that cyclins, or protein molecules, cause cells to divide quickly in the parasite.

Researchers hope the new discovery could lead to new treatments for the disease, says BBC News. Malaria is a cause of death for nearly half a million people each year.

The University of Nottingham spearheaded the study.
