The detainees were among the large group of Guantanamo detainees cleared for release, most of them Yemeni.

However, their transfer out has been complicated for years by the bad security situation in Yemen, which is why they were released in the Gulf Arab state.

“The United States is grateful to the Government of the United Arab Emirates for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility,”
Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said in a statement.

“The United States coordinated with the Government of the United Arab Emirates to ensure these transfers took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures,” he continued.

The number of Guantanamo detainees now stands at 107.
