What's the Best Way to Prevent Low Back Pain?

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Episodes of low back pain (LBP) affect more than four out of five Americans, and for many, this is a recurrent problem. So what’s the best way to prevent the pain?

Researchers reviewed multiple techniques used for prevention and found that exercise — or the combination of exercise and health education — may help. They also noted in their study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, that when used alone, education, back belts, shoe insoles and ergonomics do not prevent LBP.

Their conclusion: Exercise, or exercise combined with education, may help prevent low back pain.

It’s worth noting that the researchers indicated that much of the source data for their assessments is not of the highest quality. And due to limitations of the source studies, these findings may not be generalizable.
