Patrick Harbron/Netflix(NEW YORK) — (SEASON 1 SPOILERS AHEAD) The second season of the Marvel drama series Daredevil is now available for your binging pleasure on Netflix.
The first season of the show, about blind comic hero Matt Murdoch (Charlie Cox), who fights for justice as a lawyer by day — and with his fists as the titular masked vigilante at night — ended with Daredevil bringing down New York City criminal kingpin Wilson Fisk, who was played by Vincent D’Onofrio.
However, Murdoch soon learns that his home of Hell’s Kitchen in New York City is no safer, as new criminals have rushed in to fill the power vacuum, and there’s a new player in town hunting them without mercy.
This season, The Walking Dead vet John Bernthal joins the cast as Frank Castle, the soldier turned vigilante — and comic fan favorite — The Punisher.
The character will be spun off into his own Netflix series in the future. “He’s not a villain, he’s not a superhero. He’s just trying to make people pay for what they’ve done,” Bernthal says in a promotional clip. “As dark as he is…I want people to believe in the man behind The Punisher.”
Also new this season is Elodie Yung, who plays Murdoch’s ex-girlfriend Elektra Natchios — who has her own secret identity as a skilled assassin.
Returning for Season 2 are Elden Henson and Rosario Dawson, who play Murdoch’s childhood friend/law partner Franklin “Foggy” Nelson and Daredevil’s lifesaver, nurse Claire Temple, respectively. Also returning for the sophomore season is Deborah Ann Woll as Nelson and Murdoch’s former client-turned legal secretary Karen Page.
All episodes of the first season premiered on April 10, 2015, and while fans were binging — and raving — the cast and crew of Marvel’s Jessica Jones were hard at work on their show, which is linked to the “Man Without Fear.”
Jones, along with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist — Marvel’s so-called Hell’s Kitchen Heroes — make up an Avengers-like team known as The Defenders, who will have their own show on Netflix.
Wil Traval, who plays NYPD officer Will Simpson on Jessica Jones, explained getting to see Daredevil, and the fan reaction to it, gave them the wind at their backs while they were working. “A lot of people…on the crew were on Daredevil, and they were like, ‘What did you think of our show?’ and we were like, ‘It’s f****** awesome!”
‘It got me excited. People responded so positively,” said Erin Moriarity, who played Hope, whose plight was central role to the first season of Jessica Jones. “Definitely,” added Eka Darville, who played Jessica’s neighbor and friend Malcolm. “There was a lot of hype around it, there was a lot of positive vibes on set, seeing this kind of snowball effect with Daredevil.”
Luke Cage will be the next series to hit Netflix. It debuts on September 30 on the subscription-based streaming service.
