(ROME) — Pope Francis lauded the recent election of London Mayor Sadiq Khan in a new interview with the French daily newspaper La Croix, saying it is an example of Europe’s ability to integrate people of different religions and backgrounds.
In the wide-ranging interview, the pope also condemned the “ghettoization” of migrants and came out strongly in favor of a clear separation between church and state. He said governments must be secular, adding that confessional or religious states end badly.
The pope also said it’s important that a person’s right to conscientious objection be respected.
