Police I-D the Man Fatally Shot Tuesday At High Desert Museum

Bend, Ore. – An Oregon State Police trooper shot a 36 year-old Nicholas Berger three times after Berger held a woman at knifepoint and threatened to kill her at the High Desert Museum Tuesday, according to Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel.

It’s still remains a mystery, Hummel said, as to why Berger targeted the woman, who sustained non-life threatening injuries.

She remains unidentified, but is a 38-year-old High Desert Museum gift shop employee.

Berger, was 6 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 425 pounds, and grabbed the employee, and dragged her through the museum holding a knife to her throat.

D-A Hummel noted the employee’s tenacity to fight back.

According to Hummel, Berger has no apparent criminal convictions in Oregon, and is inquiring in to records to determine whether Berger had any criminal history in other states, or any mental health diagnoses.

The museum reopened today. An investigation is underway.
