A military spokesperson nearby said no one was injured in the explosion.

The rocket was not scheduled for launch Thursday, SpaceX said. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.

The Brevard County Emergency Operations Command says there is no threat to the public from the incident.

The Kennedy Space Center website says a launch was scheduled for Saturday morning, involving the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The launch was to carry a communications satellite for Spacecom of Israel.

An engineer at the Kennedy Space Center said that the blast shook buildings nearby and that a black mushroom cloud of smoke was seen after the initial explosion.

Last summer, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded just minutes into its mission.

SpaceX was the first private company to dock a spacecraft at the International Space Station, and was founded by Elon Musk, also the founder of Tesla Motors.

This is a developing story.
