Bermuda Braces for 'Extremely Dangerous' Hurricane Nicole

National Hurricane Center/NOAA(NEW YORK) — The “extremely dangerous Hurricane Nicole” is closing in on Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday morning.

Nicole has weakened slightly to a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph, although gusts could be even higher.

The brunt of Nicole is forecast to pass through the North Atlantic island Thursday morning through around midday, and by Thursday afternoon the worst in Bermuda is expected to have passed.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday, Nicole was located 55 miles south-southwest of Bermuda and was moving north-northeast at 15 mph.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Bermuda. Nicole is also expected to bring 5 to 8 inches of rainfall over the island Thursday.

Dangerous storm surge is also forecast for Bermuda, and tide levels could rise by as much as 6 to 8 feet above normal, according to the National Hurricane Center.

In addition, isolated tornadoes are also possible in Bermuda Thursday, the National Hurricane Center warned.
