Return of the Jedi — Mark Hamill was “stunned” by his “Star Wars” return

Disney(NEW YORK) — Mark Hamill makes his highly-anticipated return as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi December 15.

The veteran actor revealed on Good Morning America Thursday that there are “much bigger surprises” ahead in the latest Star Wars film.

Hamill explained his brief appearance at the very end of The Force Awakens was, “the most elaborate entrance of my career…Everybody talks about me for two hours,” Hamill laughed, calling the final reveal “a shock.”

“But, I think there are much bigger surprises in The Last Jedi,” Hamill teased Thursday. “In fact, the most important line Luke says is, ‘This is not going to go the way you think,’ and when I read the script I was stunned.”

Hamill also said of the new Star Wars movies, “These films now are being made by people that were children when the first films came out. They’re the generation that grew up as fans and now are in charge of the franchise and it’s just wonderful to be associated with something that makes people so happy and is escapism,” he said.

The onscreen Jedi says of his return to that galaxy far, far away: “We thought if they do another trilogy it wouldn’t involve any of our characters…So I thought, ‘Well, it’s all or nothing. It’s got to be Harrison [Ford] and Carrie [Fisher] and all of us,'” he said.

“I said, ‘Harrison will never do it. He’s so accomplished.’ I thought for sure that he would say no. When I read in the paper he signed, I said to my wife, ‘Well, I’ve been drafted,'” Hamill joked.

The Last Jedi, which also stars John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, is being released by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
