Wednesday the Bend Fire Department responded to a report of smoke alarms sounding in a 2nd floor apartment with smoke coming from the windows. The apartment was unoccupied at the time and neighbors noticed the alarms sounding. Fire crews were able to keep the fire isolated to the kitchen and minor smoke damage throughout the rest of the apartment. The fire was caused by a box being placed on the stove top as the new tenants moved in. The control knob of one of the burners was incidentally turned on and the box caught fire. The new tenants were in the process of moving in and very little personal belongings in the home yet, keeping their loss the a minimum. This is a great example of working smoke alarms help save property, even if you’re not home. With the response by the neighbors calling 911 so quickly, the fire was kept small and all 3 of the other apartments in the building can be occupied tonight.
