A Bend man was jailed after attempting to elude police in a stolen truck in Deschutes County early Wednesday. A deputy with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was driving in the area of Johnson Rd. and Tumalo Reservoir Rd. when he observed a truck driving at a high rate of speed. The deputy was able to catch up to the truck in the area of Hwy 20 near Fryrear Rd. and observed the truck pass another vehicle in a no passing area and refused to stop. The deputy pursued the truck until the pursuit was discontinued due to the driver’s reckless driving.

Deputies observed the vehicle drive onto Fryrear Rd. off of Hwy 126 and set up spike strips, deflating two of the truck’s tires. The Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) was then utilized to stop the truck in the area of Hwy 20 and Dayton Rd.

Deputies say Jalen Miller, 27,  attempted to flee from the vehicle after it had stopped. He was captured by K9 Ronin and his partner Deputy Mangin. Miller refused to comply with deputies and resisted arrest. Miller was ultimately bit by Ronin while he was resisting arrest. After the pursuit deputies learned the Ford F350 had been reported stolen from a Bend business on July 6, 2021.

Miller was transported to St. Charles for evaluation due to the K9 bite. He was later transported to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Jail. Two deputies also received minor injuries while attempting to take Miller into custody. They were evaluated at St. Charles and returned to duty.
