Central Oregon Community College’s (COCC) Nancy R. Chandler Lecture Series is pleased to present the final lecture of its fall programming, a virtual event titled “A Firsthand Account: The Crisis at the Border,” at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15. Tickets are $10 (one registration per viewing device), with live captioning available; registration is at cocc.edu/foundation/cls. This program is presented by the University of Oregon’s school of journalism and communication.
Presenter Julio Ricardo Varela, the editorial director of Futuro Media and a former digital producer for Al Jazeera America’s “The Stream,” will examine the stories of the U.S. border’s migrant situation that mainstream media tends to ignore, sharing his latest firsthand accounts. Informed by many years of covering issues and events that directly impact the Latino, Hispanic and Latinx communities, Varela is one of the leading voices when it comes to addressing the often misunderstood migrant situation.
Latino Rebels, a news site that Varela founded, is one of the top U.S. Latino digital media sites in the world. His work has been featured in many global news outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic and The Guardian.
For more information on these events, contact Charlotte Gilbride, coordinator for the Nancy R. Chandler Lecture Series, at 541-383-7257 or cgilbride@cocc.edu.
