Bend Man Arrested After Fatal Crash

A 46-year-old Bend resident was jailed after the vehicle he was driving collided with a motorcycle, killing a 48-year-old Bend man. According to Bend Police, a preliminary crash investigation determined that the suspect was driving a green GMC Envoy when he attempted to make an illegal left turn out of an apartment complex to turn westbound onto U.S. Highway 20. His Envoy collided with a motorcycle, operated by 48-year-old Bend resident Chad Jeremy Bernhardt, who was traveling eastbound on Highway 20. Bernhardt died at the scene.

The driver was arrested and jailed on suspicion of DUII, second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving and reckless endangering. The investigation is ongoing.

The road reopened at approximately 4:20 p.m. ODOT assisted the Bend Police Department with road closures and detours.
