Registration is open for Summer Academy at Oregon State University – Cascades, a six day program that introduces high school students to college life through hands-on classes and recreation.
Summer Academy sessions will run July 19-24 and July 26-31 for high school students entering grades 10, 11 and 12, with day and overnight options.
Students who complete the program will receive a $500 OSU-Cascades scholarship to be used the fall following graduation from high school.
Participants will choose from academic tracks led by OSU-Cascades faculty. Not all tracks are offered each session.
- In the Computer Science track, students will learn how computing is at the foundation of so much around us and how it has transformed how we solve problems. Students will explore computing fundamentals through video game design and development.
- A Kinesiology track will expose students to physiology, muscle function and how energy is used in the body. Participants will spend time in the FORCE biomechanics lab learning how the lab’s technology translates physical activity into data that informs us about our movement.
- The Outdoor Products option will explore outdoor gear and apparel design. Students will learn how creativity, sustainability and innovation combine to develop outdoor products. They will develop their own product prototype and discover the business, design and production facets behind outdoor products.
- An Art+Media+Tech option introduces students to traditional and digital art media including drawing, printmaking, graphic design and interactive media. Participants will explore visual storytelling and design thinking as they create original work and build creative confidence.
- The Political Science track will introduce students to how individuals and communities can influence local government decisions. They will explore civic engagement while building leadership, communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills.
- A Natural Resources track offers opportunities for students to explore conservation, sustainability and adventure leadership. Through field studies and outdoor activities, students will build an understanding of the relationship between people and their natural environment.
Summer Academy participants will explore future career options by touring a company and hearing from experts in an industry.
Recreation activities will include hiking, rock climbing and rafting the Deschutes River, weather permitting.
On campus activities include team building workshops, board games, movies and a kickball tournament.
OSU-Cascades students will serve as counselors during each session and support participants as they complete the program.
Summer Academy attendance is limited. Registration is $1,000 for the day option and $1,500 for the overnight option, which includes five nights in the student residence hall.
