Fire in Wood Village

Bend Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in Wood River Village on Cedarwood
Rd. early this morning. Crews found a home fully involved in fire when they arrived. The fire was
controlled shortly after arrival but embers from the fire spread to trees and other dry vegetation in
the neighborhood up to ¼ mile away. ODF and USFS crews were called in to assist in keeping
the wildfire from spreading to neighboring homes. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A family of five, including a newborn, safely evacuated the home. They awoke to the smell of
smoke and found portions of their living room on fire. They evacuated after briefly attempting to
extinguish the fire. It was determined that the one smoke alarm in the home did not activate. The
Red Cross responded and provided the family with a place to stay for a few nights and needed
clothing and food as all their belongings in the house were lost to the fire.
Bend Fire Department urges everyone to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home
at all time. This family was very lucky to have woken up without a smoke alarm sounding. Having
at least one working smoke alarm in your home more than doubles your chances of surviving a fire. Both the Bend Fire Department and American Red Cross have free programs to help ensure
you have working smoke alarms in your homes. We can come to your house and check your
