Bend Officers Awarded For Lifesaving Efforts

Lifesaver Award

(L-R): Bend Police Corporal Troy Wiles, Terry Howard, Mrs. Howard, Campus Public Safety Officer Kevin Lanier.

BEND, Ore. — The Bend Fire Department presented their “Lifesaver Award” to Campus Public Safety Officer Kevin Lanier and Bend Police Corporal Troy Wiles for their resuscitation of a Bend man in April.

Terry Howard was driving when he went into cardiac arrest and crashed into a house.

After calling for medical responders, the officers pulled Howard from the car and began CPR.

In the seven minutes it took for a Medic Unit to arrive, the two were also able to deliver two shocks with an emergency defibrillator.

EMS Deputy Chief Steve O’Malley says if a cardiac arrest victim is given early CPR, the chances increase of the patient responding to advanced treatment.

O’Malley adds that due to new techniques, victims are seeing unprecedented recovery, where the patient walks out of the hospital neurologically intact.
