Bend-area garbage companies are trying something new to deal with old food.

Bend Garbage & Recycling and Cascade Disposal are starting a residential food waste pilot program that will allow customers to put foods like meat, cheese and bread in the same bin as lawn clippings.

KTVZ reports only fruit and vegetable scraps are currently accepted.

If the pilot proves successful, the program could be expanded to the company’s entire service area.
