More Employers Looking at Candidates' Social Media Profiles

iStock Editorial/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — For the job-seeking recent college graduates, there’s another reason to be more careful about the content you are posting on social media sites. A new survey of more than 2,000 hiring and HR professionals finds more employers are looking at job seekers’ social media activity. In some cases, applicants are rejected because of postings on Facebook and other sites.

“Fifty-one percent of employers say they now have found something on social media that has caused them not to hire somebody and that is up from 34 percent in 2012,” Michael Erwin of CareerBuilder says. “This means that you now more than ever have to be very careful of what you are posting on social media and what your friends are posting.”

While past survey results have shown some examples of employers who actually hired candidates because of content that appeared in their social media profiles, the most recent data proves that is not always the case.

If you want a greater chance of landing that job, it may be time to take down those provocative or inappropriate photos from your wild college days.
