iStock/Thinkstock(INDIANAPOLIS) — A federal appeals court has put a hold on a judge’s order striking down a ban on same-sex marriage in Indiana.
The thousands of couples who got married after the judge’s ruling earlier this week, including lawsuit plaintiff Greg Hasty and his partner CJ Vallero, are now in legal limbo.
Hasty said, “We’re not shocked, we’re I think both totally disheartened about what it means for Hoosier families who are waiting.”
Ken Falk, director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, says he’s confident this week’s marriages will be recognized at the federal level while the state appeals.
“It’s my understanding that the U.S. Attorney General in other cases involving stays has indicated the United States will recognize the marriages in the states where there’ve been stayed judgments after people have been married and we would expect Indiana to as well,” Falk said.
