Richard E. Aaron/Redferns(NEW YORK) — Fleetwood Mac legend Stevie Nicks details her past drug addiction and cocaine habit in a new Rolling Stone article, admitting broadly, “All of us were drug addicts.”
The rock icon is candid in the magazine’s cover story, which hit newsstands on Friday, adding, “but there was a point where I was the worst drug addict.”
“I was a girl, I was fragile, and I was doing a lot of coke,” she said.
In the in-depth story about Nicks’ past, rock legend Tom Petty also shares the past concerns he had about Nicks, 66. Fleetwood Mac formed in the late 1960s and Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined the band in the 1970s.
“I was very worried about her,” Petty reveals. “To the point that if the phone did ring and they said, ‘Stevie died,’ I wouldn’t have been surprised.”
Nicks eventually went to rehab for her coke habit in the 1980s after a plastic surgeon told her she could die if she kept using the drug. “I had that hole in my nose. So it was dangerous,” she explained in the recent interview.
Having kicked the hard stuff, Nicks admits she still smokes a bit, especially with her still active in the music industry today.
“When I’m writing, I will allow myself to smoke a little bit of pot,” she added. “It’s my one little thing that I can do. I use it as a tool, and I’m very careful, you know? And I get results. However, if I thought it was going to lead me back to something worse, I’d stop.”
