Central Oregon – Firefighters have been busy responding to 10 new fires from the lightning
storms that passed through Central Oregon on Monday and Tuesday. The largest fire from those
storms so far is the Day Basin Fire approximately 7 miles southwest of Dayville.
Large air tankers have been dropping retardant on the Day Basin Fire to slow the spread of the
blaze. Firefighters have been challenged by erratic winds and difficult access but the fire has now
been lined by bulldozers at 41 acres and the Prineville Interagency Hotshots as well as a Type 2
hand crew will be working into the evening to secure the line.
The other large incident in Central Oregon is incident 519 on the Brothers-Hampton Rural Fire
Protection Association (RFPA) area south of Bear Creek and 12 miles northwest of Millican.
The fire is currently estimated at 30 acres. Prineville District BLM engines and a crew are
responding along with the RFPA to the grass fire that is currently burning on private land near
BLM managed lands.
The remainder of the fires have been held to under .25 acre.
A Fire Weather Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service in Pendleton from
Thursday July 30 at 5:00 am through 6:00 pm for dry thunderstorms. This is in effect for most of
Central Oregon.
