Ron Vesely/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Seemingly overnight, San Francisco Giants reliever Sergio Romo went from one of baseball’s best closers to unusable as the team has removed him from the closer’s role.
Romo has 22 saves this season, the seventh-most in all of Major League Baseball, but he’s been a shell of himself as of late.
He’s blown three out of his last five appearances and isn’t the same pitcher the team had grown accustomed to seeing. His ERA on May 9 was 1.65, since then his ERA has been 9.00.
“Sometimes you’ve got to change,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle. “If you keep doing the same thing over and over, sometimes it’s good for a player to back off a little bit, let him breathe and get back on track. He’s done such a great job. As a group, we’ve hit a bump in the road. As individuals, a lot of us have and hiccups.”
Bochy also told the paper that Santiago Casilla and Jeremy Affeldt will likely share closing duties for now.
