Women Complain of Harassment on Paris Subways

iStock/Thinkstock(PARIS) — Riding the subway in Paris is a not particularly pleasant experience for women.

In fact, a survey of 600 women by the High Council for Equality Between Women and Men suggests that it can be downright humiliating if not dangerous.

All of the 600 subway riders from two Paris suburbs who were polled claimed to have been sexually harassed at some point of their transit experience.

The Telegraph reports the complaints included insults, insistent flirting, whistling and comments on appearance. At the extreme level, some women reported being touched, sexually assaulted or raped.

Based on the report, French Health Minister Marisol Touraine said the situation had grown “intolerable” with the government taking “strong measures” to end this constant harassment of women.
