Texans Extend OLB Mercilus with Four-Year, $26 Million Deal

Houston Texans/NFL(HOUSTON) — The Houston Texans have signed edge rusher Whitney Mercilus Monday to a four-year extension worth $26 million.

The Texans declined Mercilus’ fifth-year option, instead opting to keep him around for another four seasons.  Had the team picked up his option, he would have been scheduled to earn $7.751 million in 2016.

Last season, Mercilus was expected to take on a reduced role after the team selected Jadeveon Clowney first overall. He started 15 games and recorded five sacks after Clowney’s rookie season was plagued with injuries. Mercilus has 18 career sacks and four forced fumbles. He was the 26th overall selection for the Texans in 2012 out of Illinois.
