Bend, Ore. – A big moment in Bend this afternoon as Olympic Gold Medalist Ashton Eaton is honored by having the track at Mountain View High School named after him.

Ashton Eaton was born in Portland, went to elementary school in La Pine and is a Mountain View High School graduate.

He is speaking to the crowd of at least 1000 people during the IMC championship track meet from 3-6 p.m. today in the school’s stadium. Between races, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Eaton thanked community members for their continued support of local schools and to participate in the ceremonial unveiling of the school’s new track, which will bear his signature and be named after him.

27 year old Eaton holds the world record in both the decathlon and indoor heptathlon events, and is only the second decathlete (after Roman Šebrle) to break the 9,000-point barrier, with 9,039 points. He won gold in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
