Paris to Remove Lovers' Locks from Bridge

iStock/Thinkstock(PARIS) — Lovers visiting Paris will have to find a new way to symbolize being together forever.

For years tourist couples have hung locks on the Pont des Arts pedestrian bridge. The act of writing each other’s names on the lock and throwing away the key was supposed to be a symbol of eternal love, but that love won’t last past Monday. Paris has plans to remove the locks for good.

According to the city council, the reason for removing the hundreds of thousands of padlocks is because of “long-term heritage degradation and a risk for visitors’ security.” Last summer, a part of the bridge collapsed because of the heavy weight.

The Associated Press reports that padlock-proof plexiglass walls will soon replace the bridge’s metal grills.
