Bend Enforces Business Sign Code

Sign CodeThe City of Bend’s is cracking down on signage on roadside and sidewalk right of ways.

Officer James Goff says the Community Development Department understands that these signs serves a purpose for business, but obstructing a right of way can a safety hazard.

“I compare it to texting and driving; your attention is divided. So if you’re driving down a road and you’re trying to read signs, where’s your attention? Your attention is not where it should be.”

Signs in violation include A-Frame sandwich boards typically placed near the sidewalk in front of a business.

Goff says that businesses in violation are warned…if the violation continues, the sign may be confiscated.

However, Goff says that rarely happens.

“For the most part, we’re just out there educating the public, educating the businesses, reminding them that the code exists, bringing their signs back to them or just asking them to ‘Hey, can you just go remove that from the right of way?’”

The department estimates a 95% positive reaction from approximately 150 contacted businesses.
