Bend, Ore. – October 4th through the 10th is National Fire Prevention Week and the Bend Fire Department is celebrating with an open House event.

It’s this Saturday, October 10th, from 11 am until 3 pm, the public is invited to visit our North fire station at 63377 Jamison Street.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.

The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.

This year’s national theme “Hear The Beep Where You Sleep”. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.

Roughly half of home fire deaths are reported between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM when most people sleep. Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm reduces your risk of dying in a fire by 50%.
