Joe Raedle/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) — General Motors and Lyft joining forces to beat their rivals in the race to get self-driving cars off the starting line.

The companies announced on Monday a “long-term strategic alliance to create an integrated network of on-demand autonomous vehicles in the U.S.”

Under the alliance, GM will invest $500 million in Lyft, hold a seat on its board of directors, get access to the company’s software and become a preferred provider of short-term use vehicles. Lyft, meanwhile, will get access to the automaker’s experience in connectivity.

“We see the future of personal mobility as connected, seamless and autonomous,” GM President Dan Ammann said in a statement. “With GM and Lyft working together, we believe we can successfully implement this vision more rapidly.”
