Bend, Ore. – Lots of opposition Monday evening by hundreds of residents who don’t want to see multifamily housing along Shevlin Park Road, saying the area can’t handle the high density or any more traffic.
The land is owned by Central Oregon Community College.
Of the 90 people who spoke at the public hearing, only three supported the development.
No decision was made at the Bend Planning Commission meeting, but city staff did recommend the commission sign off on a requested zoning change, with some conditions, saying the development would help meet the city’s goal of increasing housing other than single-family homes.
Under the proposed plan, COCC would retain the ownership of the land and work with William Smith Properties to develop 15 acres on the south side of Shevlin Park Road at Mt. Washington Drive.
COCC has said this would bring in a revenue stream at a time when enrollment and state funding are down.
