Bend, Or – November 11, at 11 a.m. – 15th Annual Veterans Day Parade of Bend presented by The Bend Chamber. Theme: Duty, Honor, Sacrifice…Celebrating our World War II Veterans. Grand Marshal: Corporal Lorin Myring, US. Marine Corps and Central Oregon World War II Veterans. Civil Air Patrol will flyover at 11 a.m. to kick off the parade. Floats, military vehicles, school bands, dance clubs join community organizations to pay tribute to those who have served. Parade begins on NW Newport Avenue at Veterans Memorial Bridge, marching south on NW Wall, NW Franklin, around Drake Park on NW Riverside Drive, concluding on NW Galveston and NW Harmon Street. Lorin Myring was a corporal in the Marine Corps Fifth Division. He was in the first wave that stormed the South Pacific island in World War II. “It was a massacre the first day,” Myring said. He was 19 when the Battle of Iwo Jima began. Myring was trained in communications, He worked alongside his friend, Navajo Code Talker, Willie Notah who was killed at Iwo Jima. The Navajo language served as the basis for a code that the Japanese were unable to crack. “All the ships saw it in the bay,” Myring says of the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima. He spent time in Nagasaki after the atomic bombing. Lorin Myring, 89 yrs. old, is a Marine and a dedicated public servant. A kind hearted, humble and generous man who donates his time and resources to worthwhile organizations. He is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps League, Military Order of the Purple Heart, 5th Marine Division, Oregon Police Association and Bend Band of Brothers. He was one of the original members of the Bend Band of Brothers which was started at Jake’s Diner in l988. Lorin Myring is a loyal friend to all. Semper Fi !
