OSU-Cascades hosts public lecture on impact of Taylor Swift’s music and fan communities

The impact of Taylor Swift and her music will be the topic of a public talk at Oregon State University – Cascades on Jan. 26 by Keith Nainby, a visiting professor of communication studies and researcher.

The event will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium of Edward J. Ray Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus. The talk is free, but registration is required.

Titled “I Can Feel Time Moving: Why Taylor Swift’s Art Endures,” the presentation will explore how Swift has developed music that connects fans and audiences around the globe.

Nainby is a communication studies instructor and researcher at California State University, Stanislaus. He is the author of “Examining Blank Spaces and the Taylor Swift Phenomenon: An Investigation of Contingent Identities.” The book examines many aspects of Swift’s popularity and success as a songwriter and musician, including her cultural relevance and communities of fans, known as Swifties. It compares and contrasts the phenomenon of her success with that of artists like Bob Dylan and the Beatles.
